Kyoto was the capital of Japan for about 1000 years from the Heian Period started in 794, and its role as Japan's capital is not described by simple words.  It is not an exaggeration to say that the Japanese culture that we have in our mind was established gradually in Kyoto.  One can enjoy the Old Kyoto in the Gion/Kiyomizu area that Gion Kyuraku located.  There are not only old machiyas but resturants that you can enjoy traditional Japanese cuisines, cafes featuring Japanese style sweets, shop for traditional Japanese crafts etc...  Gion Kyuraku is located in Gion/Kiyomizu area, the golden area of Old Kyoto's miniaturization which many people imagine.  In the golden area, there are also supermarkets, convenience stores, banks etc. where you can enjoy "living in Kyoto" while staying at Gion Kyuraku.
